The Volunteers, Fr. Sultzen, the Sisters, the Girls
July this year saw the 4th
annual Canadian Martyrs Camp near Grand Bend, Ontario (west
of Toronto). This year's record attendance was set, with 37
boys and 30 girls in attendance. As with each year, the busy
schedule consisted of the usual camp actives: Daily Mass,
Confessions, Catechism and Rosary; canoeing, swimming, archery,
games, campfires each evening, and crafts. The crafts consisted
of Rosary Making, Stained Glass, Candle Making (a local apiary
owner came for a presentation on bees), Picture Frames and
Woodworking for the boys and Painting and Art for the girls.
Fr. Carl Sulzen was Camp Chaplain,
and conducted the camp with the assistance of six seminarians
from St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary for the Boys Camp and two
Oblate Sisters from Toronto for the girls camp. Generous volunteers
of counselors and kitchen help from various chapels completed
the camp staff.
The Catechism was based on the
Eight Beatitudes, and the camp was placed under the patronage
of the Canadian Martyrs (also referred to as the North American
Martyrs). Each evening Father Sulzen would explain the life
and virtues of one of the Martyrs, and the children's memory
was tested on both their knowledge of the Martyrs and of the
Beatitudes.
Father Sulzen thanks all the
volunteers who helped this year, as well as all those who
assisted by their prayers and donations.
