Little Talks to Little Folks

The Garden In My Soul

We know that God loves a beautiful garden because, He gave Adam and Eve the beautiful garden of Eden to live in and enjoy; that is until they ate the forbidden fruit!

Imagine, that when we are in the state of grace, we have a beautiful garden in our soul. The sun is shining brightly and there are no clouds in the sky. There are millions of flowers, of every colour and kind like roses, violets, and lilies. Millions of birds are sitting on branches and singing their beautiful songs. The grass is like green velvet, and a sparkling brook tumbles over little rocks as it winds its way through our garden. There are lovely trees like evergreens, maples, elms and willows. Jesus and Mary love to see our souls like this.

As long as we try to practice virtue, our garden remains beautiful, but when we become lazy and sinful, our garden no longer looks as beautiful. When we commit a venial sin, a flower wilts, a bird stops singing, or some leaves fall from a tree. Now it is true, we all commit venial sin, and we only have a perfectly beautiful garden after we have gone to confession.

But look what would happen if you should fall into mortal sin! The flowers would all die! The grass would turn brown! The beautiful crystal clear stream would turn muddy and black! All the birds would die and they would no longer sing their beautiful songs! The sun would stop shining and everything would be black! How terrible! Now you wouldn’t want that to happen, would you! Of course not!

Remember we can add to the beauty of our garden by practising virtue. Every time we obey Mommy and Daddy, another flower grows in our garden, or another beautiful bird appears, perhaps a beautiful canary singing his heart out. Every time we say our Rosary, we add dozens of pretty roses to our garden, or when we do penance, we pull out some weeds from our garden. So start today to practise virtue and always have the most beautiful garden in your soul to offer to Jesus and Mary.
