The Spirit Indeed is Willing, But the Flesh Weak

Thoughts for Lent

Dear Crusaders,

One day, Jesus took His most beloved apostles, Sts. Peter, James & John, to the top of a high mountain, Mount Thabor. There, He was transfigured before them. His face shone bright like the sun, and His garments became white as snow.  Later on, He took the same apostles to another mountain, the garden of Gethsemane.  There, His soul became sad unto death, and His face was covered with a sweat of blood.  On Mount Thabor, St. Peter, all excited, said: “Master, it is good for us to be here”.  In Gethsemane, Jesus gave him a blast: “Could you not watch one hour with me? The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.”

This is true of many man, and also of you, dear children.  During your time of prayer, at Mass, and when you go to confession, you are making the most beautiful promises to Jesus.  But when it is time to put these promises into practice, often the best resolutions collapse like a castle of cards.  One day, listening to the catechism lesson, you have decided: “Yes, I will do my best, like Jesus!”  Then, when you get back home, it happens that one of your brothers or sisters gets into your way.  Quickly, you get into a fight.  Another day, you had decided to do extra sacrifices for the conversion of your Non-Catholic friends, but when the time comes, nothing!  Why? Because the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak!

Do not be surprised about this, dear children!  The great apostle St. Paul himself, went through the same thing.  He told us: “For the good which I will, I do not; but the evil which I will not, that I do… Unhappy man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?  The grace of God, by Jesus-Christ Our Lord.”

Yes, dear children, it is not by your own merits that you are able to do well.  Unless Jesus takes you by the hand, you would not be able to do anything good.  Receive Jesus by daily Communion (at least Spiritual).  He will be your guide throughout the day. At your morning prayers, beg Him to help you to keep your resolutions.  With Jesus, your spirit will be willing, and the weaknesses of the flesh will cool down.

I keep such intentions in my prayer
