Little Talks to Little Folks

The Humility of Jesus

Do you remember the story of the Blind man in the Gospel, who cried out to Jesus, to cure him?  He was not afraid of what people thought of him.  He was not full of “Pride” and “Human Respect.”

But there are many adults and children who always worry about what people think of them.  Before they do anything, they wonder, “What will people think of me if I do this?”  This is a very common fault with children and it is called Vanity!  Some children don’t want to make the sign of the cross when they go past a Catholic Church, because they are afraid of what people might think.  Some children don’t study because they are afraid that other children will call them “Bookworms.”  But this is easy to overcome if you pray and try.  I hope the following little story will help you.

A long time ago there was a man called Gerald who was always afraid of what people would think of him.  He could hardly do anything, without worrying about what everyone was going to think.

He prayed to his Guardian Angel to help him, and one night he had a dream.  He dreamed that his Guardian Angel took him to Jerusalem.  He had never been to the Holy Land where Jesus had lived, but he had seen pictures of the holy places before.

Suddenly, before his eyes, he saw a man dragging himself through the streets.  People were shouting at him!  Gerald was amazed at what he saw.  As the man came closer, Gerald froze on the spot!  He saw that it was no ordinary man.  It was Jesus!  Jesus was carrying a heavy cross.  He was in great pain and was bleeding from His wounds.  He was so weak that He kept on falling to the ground.  One of the most amazing things that Gerald noticed, was that Jesus did not care about what the people thought of Him!  Jesus carried on doing His best and praying for the people who were shouting at Him.

Suddenly Gerald realized how foolish he had been to worry about what people would think of him.  He realized that he had been making a big mistake.  He decided then and there to change his life and be more humble, “From now on I will be like Jesus, and not worry about what people think.”  His Guardian Angel smiled, “Your prayers have been answered.  Go now and be faithful and humble,” and from that day on, Gerald was a different man.
