Eucharistic Crusade

Dear Crusaders,

All Souls Day is over!  Does this mean that the souls of the departed will be forgotten again till next year?  Do we listen to the sighs of the suffering souls only for a very short time?  Just the opposite, our charity should always be applied to rescue the souls in Purgatory.  Why?

These people died protected by the robe of sanctifying grace. However, their robe of grace was not perfectly clean, and nothing stained can get into heaven.  It has to be cleaned.  During this time, they will be separated from God, who knows for how long. One day, they will sing with the angels the praises of the Blessed Trinity: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Hosts!”

If we really want to see many souls around the throne of God, we should pray for the separated souls every day.  For the sake of the love of God and for His glory, we can help many souls to get to heaven and increase the honour of God by their praises.

Many of these souls are known to us. Some among you have knelt before the grave of your grandparents or other relatives. But, even if it did not yet happen in your immediate family, you should think of all the souls that came before us with the sign of the faith as your brothers and sisters, for we are all redeemed by the same blood of Jesus Christ!

For you too, the day may come when your soul might have to rely on the piety and help of others to reach heaven from the pain of Purgatory.

The following is a true story of how the merciful love of the souls in Purgatory was rewarded here on earth.  Little Peter was living at the house of his older brother, where he had a tough life.  His job was to watch over the flock, but he not fed well.  Most of the time, the poor child had to walk bare feet, and wear worn out clothes.  One day, he found a coin of silver.  Since he was honest, he made a thorough inquiry to find the lawful owner, but could not find him.  What did Peter with that money?  Did he buy food or clothes for him?  No, he took the silver coin to a priest, and asked him to say a Mass for the souls in Purgatory.

Such act of charity did not remain without a reward.  The priest spoke to another brother of Peter, who took good care of him.  He paid for Peter’s studies, and Peter became a priest, then a bishop, then a cardinal.  Moreover, Peter became a doctor of the Church, whom we know under the name of St. Peter Damian.  Often, St. Peter Damian used to say, “This single Mass I had paid for the souls in Purgatory was for me the most valuable of all blessings.”  Dear children, like little Peter you too will be in need of heavenly blessings during your life.  To make yourselves worthy of such blessing, be merciful with the souls in Purgatory.
