Our Holy Land

Dear Crusaders,

Once Napoleon went to Palestine, to the town of Nazareth.  He stopped at a poor Franciscan convent and met a friar whom he had been a schoolmate of in Corsica.  Napoleon was very pleased to meet him and they exchanged fond memories from the past.  As the Emperor was leaving, he asked the religious to express one wish of him.  The friar answered, “ I do not have any other desire as long as I am here in the Holy Land where Our Lord was living.”

Yes, dear children, these are the sentiments of Christians who kneel at the very place where Jesus appeared as a little child, where He preached the gospel and shed His Precious Blood! I am most thankful to have experienced this.  However, most Christians who would love to the Holy Land, can only learn about it from books.

Dear children,  we do have a Holy Land, which is, symbolically, everything we would dream to see in Palestine. As the star guided the three kings to the Child Jesus in Bethlehem, we are guided to Him in the church.  The red light from the Sanctuary Lamp tells you He is present in the “house of bread” (the tabernacle), where Jesus stays in the host.

At Mass, the priest says the Gloria, Glory be to God in the Highest, as the Angels did at Christ’s birth in Bethlehem.  At the time of Consecration, you are at the foot of Calvary.  Sure, you won’t hear the sound of Our Lord’s voice, but listen to the priest and Jesus speaks to your heart.

You see, dear children, the church is our Holy Land.  On Sunday, as the Crusaders of the old days, our Crusaders of the Holy Eucharist should have only one desire, “God wants it; I will go to the Holy Land, the house of God.”  And, if it is given to you to be able to come during the week, God bless your heart.  Remember also, that in the church, like in the Holy Land, you ought to show great respect: it is the House of God.  This helps you to get your soul ready to enter one day in the Promised Land of heaven.
