The Light of Christ

Dear Crusaders,

The city of Jerusalem was recovered from the infidels.  Thanks to the heroic bravery of the Crusaders, the places sanctified by the blood of the Saviour were once again in the hands of Christians. The bravest knight, who had been the first to climb the walls of the city, was chosen to lead a Candles’ Procession.  He was the first one to light his candle to the lamp of the Holy Sepulchre, but as he leaned to light his candle at the very place where Jesus had been buried, tears came to his eyes.

Now, there is going to be another procession, with no rough warriors, but only children without swords.  A noble competition is animating them to fight the battle, to become masters of their own hearts.  The good Lord is keeping an account of their sacrifices, their prayers and their visits to the Blessed Sacrament.  He keeps track also of all the victories over selfishness and gluttony.  Now they are worthy to light their candle to the Holy Sepulchre, and to receive Jesus in their heart, the Light of the world, on the day of their First Holy Communion.

The brave knight made the promise to do his best to keep his candle lit.  He would bring the flame back to Italy and use it to light a candle on the altar of Our Lady in the basilica of his home town of Florence.  He took a supply of fresh candles with him.  When robbers attacked him on the way, he gave them everything except the burning candle.  In the middle of the night, he would wake up to check the candle that glowed close to his bed.  Finally, he was able to bring home the lighted candle to the tomb of Christ.

You, too, dear children, you must take home, in heaven, a holy light.  Such light is the grace of God, which purifies and sanctifies your heart.  On the way home, watch for robbers, the devils, who want to steal everything from you, including the light.  Give up everything, but keep the light on… and to make sure that the light will stay on. Remember to light often a new candle, which comes near to the light of Christ, by receiving Holy Communion.

When the Crusader got home, his friend did not recognize him.  The light of Christ had converted him.  Now, he was a saint.

The same thing will happen to you, dear Crusaders, if you are zealous to keep the light of Christ in your souls, by making good Communions!
