Little Talks to Little Folks

Jesus Our Savior

When the first Missionaries arrived in Greenland, and were preaching the Gospel, they could not find in the language of the Greenlanders, a word that meant "Saviour".  For a long time they tried to explain to the Greenlanders that Jesus is the Saviour of the world, but no matter how had they tried, the Greenlanders could not understand what a "Saviour" was!

The Missionaries prayed and one day, God answered their prayer.  They again tried to explain what a "Saviour" was, and one of the Greenlanders asked the Missionary Priest, "Do you mean this perhaps: a man is standing on the shore and he sees a man in a boat on the ocean.  The waves turn the boat upside down and the man is drowning in the ocean.  Then the man on the shore jumps into the waves, swims toward the man and saves him from drowning by bringing him to shore!"

The Missionary laughed, "Yes, that's a very good way of explaining what the "Saviour" is."  Then the Missionary told them that all men were in danger of losing their souls for all Eternity, but Jesus went into the waves of suffering in order to save us and help us get to the shores of Heaven!  So it happened that in the language of the Greenlanders, the word "Saviour" means the same as "One who goes into the waves and saves the drowning man."

Remember the Bible stories where Jesus was with some of his disciples in a boat.  A great storm came upon them and waves covered the boat and filled the boat with water.  But Jesus was sleeping and the poor disciples were terrified, so they woke up Jesus saying, "Lord, save us, we perish!"  Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith?"  Then Jesus in His great mercy rose up and told the wind to stop blowing and said to the sea, "Peace. Be still!"  Suddenly the wind stopped blowing and the sea became still.

So you see, Jesus is all powerful and can control the winds and the waters because He is God.  Jesus is always there to help you, and you must trust in Him and call on Him at all times, especially when the storms of temptation come upon you!  You must love the Holy Wounds of Jesus and think about His sufferings every day, especially when you are tempted to sin.  And you must call on Mary, the Star of the Sea, and she will also help you in your time of temptation.
