The Lost Key

Dear Crusaders,

Gerard, the young servant of a bishop, was standing still before the deep well of the village.  With panic, he was looking down to the deep and dark waters.  The key of the house dropped from his little fingers, and it was now at the bottom of the well.  What the bishop will say?  Will I get fired?  Such were the scary thoughts coming through the mind of the young lad.  Suddenly, a thought came up to his mind.  He rushed to the nearby cathedral and grabbed the Infant Jesus from the Nativity crib.  He went back to the well. A curious crowd gathered.  What is that lad going to do with the Infant Jesus?  “Little Jesus, you are the only one that can take me out of trouble.  Help me to find the key.”  Then, he tied the statue to a rope, which he dropped to the well.  “Little Jesus, bring back the key to me.”  When Gerard lifted up the rope, everybody was amazed to see the Infant Jesus holding the key in his little hands.  You can imagine that it was with great joy and thanksgiving that Gerard brought the statue back to the church.

Dear children, that is a true story, taken from the life of St. Gerard Majella! I think we could also apply it to the time of Advent we are starting now.

Men had lost the key of heaven.  By using tricks and telling lies, the devil had managed to take that key away from men, and to drop it in the abyss of darkness.  Men tried everything to get the key back, but they couldn’t.  Then, they understood that God Himself had to get it.  That is why they begged God:  “Let the just one descend, O Heavens, like dew from above.  Like gentle rain let the skies drop him down.”  He came, and everything was put back into place: soon, the gates of heaven reopened, and the souls of the just came in.

Dear children, the time of Advent just started.  It will remind us of the long episode of the search for the Saviour who will be able to recover the lost key.  How thankful we should be to Jesus for finding the key.  Did you lock Jesus out of your heart by a serious sin?  Let him come back with a good confession.  Open your heart to the Messiah by a good communion; this will be the best way to get ready for Christmas.
