Behind the Door

Dear Crusaders,

The missionary had just completed the Catechism class for converts. In two days, the pagans were going to be baptized, and become children of God. In the evening, a young man went to see the priest, and begged him to be baptized. Looking at him, the missionary realized that he was quite serious. “Do you realize that, if you get baptized, your grandma will deprive you from her inheritance?” “Yes, I know, and I renounce to her money.” The priest went further: “You should not go too fast to get baptized, and be well instructed about the faith.” “Father, I know by heart my catechism and all my prayers.” “But, how did you learn? I didn’t see you at the Catechism class for converts.” “I was behind the door. I heard everything you said in the catechism class, and I remember everything.” The missionary was so impressed by the zeal of that young man, that he admitted him to be baptized with those who had been attending the Catechism class.

What an example of courage! This young man gave up his inheritance, he exposed himself to be cursed by a pagan woman, but he did not give up the faith. Dear children, you don’t have to worry like this young man. You are in a Catholic family, and nobody is going to give you heck because you are studying your Catechism. On the contrary, if you study well, you will be praised and rewarded. So, please, do not be beated by this young pagan who did so many sacrifices to learn the true religion.

It was not easy to stand behind the door, and to pay attention to what was said in the class. You have it easy, with beautiful Catechism books. So, why are you day-dreaming while the teacher is explaining a lesson?

As the class was finishing, the young man was taking off quietly, while ruminating on the contents of the lesson. Do you have the same zeal to study your religion? Or, are you dreaming of the next hockey game or soccer game?

Dear children, I beg you to take seriously the Catechism class when it starts again in September. Meanwhile, I am encouraging you to take advantage of the summer vacation to read some lives of the saints. You will find there some very edifying examples that will lead you to put into practice the motto of the Eucharistic Crusade: Prayer – Communion – Sacrifice - Apostolate.
