A strange church cleaner
What kind of strange noise was heard at night in the cathedral of Ratisbonne? It sounded like a broom on the floor. At the same time whispering voices were heard. Then, looking more closely, what could be seen? Something white. Was it a ghost? Not at all, but it was the venerable rector of the cathedral, Mgr. Wittmann, who, as he was cleaning the church, was praying for his students But why was he using with his choir garment for such a dirty job? Why he was not using working clothes? There was a reason: for that holy priest, the church was a very holy place, and the cleaning thereof was somehow a sacred function, which should be done using sacred vestments. I am not asking the men in charge of cleaning our churches to dress up with cassock and surplice, while they clean the holy places, but I would like all of you to be conscious of the holiness of our churches and chapels. As it is said in the beautiful office of the Dedication of a Church: “My house is a house of prayer, said the Lord, therein whoever asks will receive, whoever looks will find, and to whomever knocks, it will be opened.” Look at that good and holy priest. Follow his attitude of respect and devotion. So often, we get distracted at church, and we forget that we are in a holy place. Next time you go to church, you will apply yourself to avoid the useless talking that don’t fit with the holiness of the sacred place Now, you may wonder why that holy priest was so dedicated to pray for
his students. He knew that their souls were the temples of the Holy Ghost.
Yes, dear children, your soul is like the house of God. Be on watch at
the gate of your soul, and do not allow the least grains of dust to enter
into such a sanctuary. Do not allow the eternal light of sanctifying grace
to extinguish. Make your heart like an altar where you will offer to God
many sacrifices out of love! Father
