Under good guard
On the rooftop of his parents’ home, young Jacque Olier played with a little bird. The poor thing was shaking with fear of the child and suddenly flew to freedom. It landed on the neighbour’s roof. What to do?! Jacques was willing to try anything to catch his bird, even to climb across rooftops. But, mindful of the danger, he said a prayer to his guardian angel for help. Old shingles dropped to the ground as he dangerously chased the bird on that rooftop. The boy’s tutor called him down, and a stern whip was used on Jacques to remind him that a house’s roof is not a place for boys to play! Years later, Jacques Olier grew up to be a priest, but he still shook at the memory of the dangerous bird hunt. “I deeply thank God and my guardian angel for protecting me on that occasion. As my guardian angel remembers all the details, let us thank God for His assistance. I would not advise you to try Jacques’ trick. However, he did remember to pray to his guardian angel! He remembered well the words of Psalm 90: “God ordered to his angels to keep you in all your ways: they will carry you on their hands, so that your foot will not be hurt by a stone.” Will your guardian angel necessarily protect you from dangers to your body? No, his main job is to guard you against the dangers to your soul. St. Jerome said once that the human soul is great, because each one is guarded by a guardian angel. You are not alone when you go down the street. An angel is standing beside you. When the devil tries to catch you, God is with you: you have your guardian angel! Call on him for help and listen to his good inspiration. Entrust yourself every day to him because he is a faithful friend who will never abandon you. Father
