Little Talks to Little People

THE COMEDIAN

Some time ago, Ferravilla, the greatest comedian in Italy, died. A comedian is somebody who does funny things to make people laugh. During the many years of his life he gave many joyous hours to thousands and thousands of people. He made them laugh and forget all about their troubles, at least for the time they were watching him.

But toward the end of his life, he had to endure great sufferings. At one time he is said to have complained in a loud and bitter voice, "I, Ferravilla, the comedian who eased so many pains, by making so many people laugh, now have to suffer so much! And now I, with all my pains, can not laugh any more!"

The Bible says in Ecclesiasticus: "There is a time to weep and a time to laugh." Life is no picnic; not at all. For most of us, the roses of earthly joy only last for a short while. For example: we get a new balloon, but we break it on the way home, we get some ice cream, but after we eat it the joy is over, we have a pet rabbit and a few years later it dies, we get a new bicycle and after a while it gets a flat tire. Nothing lasts forever on this earth!

Knowing that life and things don't last very long on this earth, we should always be prepared for death. Death can come so quickly; yes, even to little children. That is why we should always be prepared.

And what is a good way to be prepared, you might ask? A good way to be prepared at all times for death is to live a good life. You can live a good life by doing what your Mommy and Daddy tell you to do. You can be kind to your brothers and sisters and your friends. You can pray for the souls in purgatory and for other people you know, and you can pay attention to the priest when you go to Mass.

It's nice to know that we have so many angels and saints to help us live a good life. Make friends with the angels and saints! Pick out a few favourites and pray to them from day to day. And don't just pray to them, talk to them as well. Tell Jesus and Mary you are having troubles with your homework, and that you need their help. Tell St. Michael the Archangel that you are afraid of the dog next door, even if it is tied up! Tell St. Joseph you need help cleaning your room, or doing the dishes. Then put your best foot forward in doing these things and you will see; it will get easier. The saints are there to help us, call on them always – and don't forget to thank them.
