Eucharistic Crusade

O Lord, grant us holy priests!

Dear Crusaders,

As usual, at the end of this month of June, some young men will be ordained priests of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This wonderful event should bring great joy to all the members of the Eucharistic Crusade!

As a matter of fact, there is a profound connection between the Eucharistic Crusade and the priest. You are used to go to Mass, and to receive Holy Communion; but remember who said that Mass, and who gave you Holy Communion. Without a priest, there would be no Mass, no Communion, thus no Eucharistic Crusade.

Therefore, the members of the Eucharistic Crusade should keep in mind that they have a special duty to pray for priests; that God will send many good and holy priests who will say Mass and give Holy Communion to the faithful. Here is a story that happened during War World I: there were two brothers, whose names were James and John. James, the oldest, was a very good and pious young man, who wanted to become a priest. He intended to join the seminary, but when the war broke out, he was called to the battlefield. John, his younger brother, was a happy-go-lucky man; always cracking jokes. He was also a good catholic but not as devout as James, his older brother. One day, during a fierce battle, it happened that James was seriously wounded.

There was no priest around, but only his younger brother John, who was at his side, helping him the best he could as he was dying. With a weak voice, James told his brother: “Dear John, you know, I was going to become a priest, but now it is over, I am going to die. Who will say Mass, who will give Holy Communion? I want you to promise me that you will pray to the Blessed Virgin so that she will call another young man to replace me at the altar of God.” Then, it was over, James stopped breathing, his soul had left his body. John remembered the promise he gave to his dying brother: from that day on, every day, he would pray the Hail Mary so that the Good Lord would call another young man to become a priest to replace his brother.

When the war was over, John went back home. Then, he went on to study to become a doctor. Often, he was thinking about the words he heard from his dying brother. One day, he realized that he was to be the one who would replace his brother, and become a priest. Shortly after, John joined the seminary, and was ordained priest a few years later.

After his priestly ordination, John had a dream in which he saw his older brother James surrounded by a great light. James told him: “As I was lying on the battlefield, I offered my life to Jesus, for a priest, now here you are.” Years later Father John died. Who is going to replace him? Pray for vocations!
